What is an IP Address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.

How Do IP Addresses Work?

IP addresses serve two main functions:

  • **Host or network interface identification**: Identifies the device on the network
  • **Location addressing**: Provides the location of the device on the network

  • IPv4 vs IPv6

    IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4):

  • Uses 32-bit addresses
  • Provides approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses
  • Format: 192.168.1.1

  • IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6):

  • Uses 128-bit addresses
  • Provides 340 undecillion unique addresses
  • Format: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334

  • Types of IP Addresses

    Public IP Address

  • Assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Visible to the entire internet
  • Used to identify your device globally

  • Private IP Address

  • Used within private networks (like your home WiFi)
  • Not accessible from the internet
  • Common ranges: 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x

  • Why Your IP Address Matters

Your IP address is important for:

  • Enabling communication between devices
  • Providing location information
  • Network security and troubleshooting
  • Accessing online services

  • Learning about IP addresses is fundamental to understanding how the internet works!
